Intended to become the go-to restaurant for South-east Asian food in Doha, Tuk Tuk Saigon was envisioned by the owner as a place where one could experience the full sense of traditional Thai and Vietnamese cuisine and atmosphere. With the subtle use of decorative elements that evoke the intended ambiance, such as the typical neon signage and corrugated metal panels used as signage booths, the Architect infused the space with a spirit of traditional Thai & Vietnamese interiors. The many string lights and paper lanterns visible from the outside are imported directly from Thailand and Vietnam. They quickly become the focus of attention for visitors, as their glowing light fills the space with an array of warm colors. The lanterns hang from the high ceiling at the entrance, giving a glimpse of the mezzanine above to the entering visitors and adding richness and vivacity to a restaurant that’s intended to welcome large scale events and gathering despite its limited size.

The design process, given the short timeline, had to be rigorous and effective - starting from the main kitchen, which combines both Thai and Vietnamese cuisine in a very tight space. DAL Architects collaborated with Interior Designer Puri Design and local kitchen specialist to achieve the most efficient layout. Despite the singular staircase up to the mezzanine floor, services such the crucial dumbwaiter and visitor bathrooms have been tucked away intelligently so as to preserve privacy and a maximum number of tables.

Since the onset of the project, DAL Architects worked on fast-paced rhythm to design and build in less than 6 months, and coordinated intensively with all stakeholders and contractors to ensure timely delivery, with a grand opening just a few days before the World Cup kick-off!
